ABOUT BITBACKME
DECENTRALISED FUNDRAISING BACKED BY BITCOIN
BitBackMe is a Bitcoin-only fundraising site. You put your story and your own Bitcoin address on a
public page. Supporters send Bitcoin from their wallet to yours. We never hold the money. We cannot
freeze a wallet or reverse a payment.
Why this exists
In 2022, during the Canadian trucker protests, banks and payment firms froze accounts of people who
took part and of people who donated to them. The message was simple: if the institution disagrees with
you, the account you thought was yours can be shut.
That was not a one-off. In September 2023, I was debanked by NAB in
Australia after more than 30 years as a customer. The letter cited a clause that only says the bank may
close an account. No clear reason. Branch staff could not explain it either.
I posted the letter and the follow-up at the time:
Hi @NAB team,
— Shane73✝️⚡ (@TheShane73) September 12, 2023
I received a surprising letter today.
It says you are going to close my bank accounts in 45 days, effectively debanking me.
The only reason stated was, it was “in line with section 143 of the banking code”.
I looked up the stated banking code here:… pic.twitter.com/yG7XnLOWdD
If a bank can close a quiet small-business account with no explanation, it can close anyone’s.
Fundraising that depends on cards, platforms and bank rails can be switched off the same way. Bitcoin
cannot.
Who we are
We are a small team of passionate Bitcoiners. The site is founded by Shane Lucas. Shane bought his first Bitcoin in January 2018. BitBackMe is run from Australia.
How we work
A campaign on BitBackMe is a public page with a story and an address the campaign manager controls. You can check the address
on Mempool.
Anyone can read a campaign. Publishing one is for people aged 18 or over.
We are not a charity, bank, trustee, escrow or payment processor. We do not take a cut of donations. The only fee is a $20 AUD review fee when you publish a campaign. A small fee to help pay for hosting.
We read submissions and we refuse pages that break the guidelines and laws. Any campaign applications promoting terrorism, trafficking, weapons and drugs, child exploitation, slavery, will be refused.
We do not investigate every claim and a live page is not a stamp of truth.
Donors send Bitcoin from their wallet directly to the campaign manager's own wallet.
Please DYOR before you send any Bitcoin to anyone.
